Wealth protection solutions
Four areas, one coordinated plan. Jasmine compares options from several carriers in each.
Protection for you and the people who depend on you
If the main earner is gone, or too sick to work, the mortgage does not stop. The right coverage lets the people who depend on you keep the house instead of selling under pressure.
- Term life insurance: Coverage for the mortgage and working years at the lowest cost, often with living benefits.
- Permanent life insurance: Lifelong coverage with tax-deferred cash value that can support later goals.
- Living benefits: Part of the benefit paid early after a qualifying terminal, chronic or critical illness. How living benefits work.
Retirement planning and annuities
A retirement plan should answer two questions: how much income you can count on, and what happens if markets fall right when you need the money.
- Annuities: Tax-deferred growth and lifetime income options for retirement. Surrender charges can apply to early withdrawals, and guarantees depend on the issuing insurer.
- Retirement income planning: A plan for turning savings into dependable income, coordinated with your 401(k), IRA and Social Security.
- Permanent life insurance cash value: A supplemental source of funds later in life; withdrawals and loans reduce the death benefit.
Education funding planning
Tuition is easier to plan for when the plan starts early and does not depend on one paycheck.
- A plan started early: An estimate of future education costs and a realistic amount to set aside each month.
- Cash value life insurance: Cash value that can later be used for any purpose, including tuition, alongside savings such as a 529 plan.
- Protection for the plan: If a parent passes away, the death benefit can keep the education goal on track.
Plans for business owners
A business is often an owner’s largest asset and largest risk. Planning covers both: keeping more of what you earn, and keeping the business running if something happens to you or a key person.
- Tax-saving retirement plans: Qualified and non-qualified plan options for owners and key employees, coordinated with your CPA.
- Business continuation: Life insurance that can fund a buy-sell agreement, so the business can continue if an owner passes away.
- Key person protection: Coverage on the people the business would struggle to replace.
- Business transition: Planning ahead for the sale or succession of your business, coordinated with your attorney and CPA.
Living benefits at a glance
Living benefits turn life insurance into protection you can use during a serious illness, not only after death. What qualifies depends on the policy, so the definitions are reviewed line by line before you apply.
| What they are | Accelerated benefit riders that pay part of your death benefit early, while you are alive |
| Terminal illness | Usually a physician-certified life expectancy of 12 to 24 months, depending on the policy |
| Chronic illness | Usually unable to perform 2 of 6 activities of daily living, such as bathing or dressing, or a severe cognitive impairment |
| Critical illness | A covered diagnosis such as a heart attack, stroke, invasive cancer or kidney failure; the list varies by policy |
| How the money can be used | Treatment, the mortgage, lost income or anything else |
| Effect on the policy | Money paid early reduces the death benefit, and any cash value |
| Cost | Some policies include these riders with no added premium and apply a charge only if you claim; others charge for the rider |
| Available on | Many term and permanent policies; terms vary by carrier and state |
Term vs permanent life insurance
| Term life | Permanent life | |
|---|---|---|
| How long it lasts | A set term, such as 10, 20 or 30 years | Designed to last for life if funded as planned |
| Premium for the same death benefit | Usually much lower | Higher |
| Living benefits | Available as riders on many policies | Commonly available as riders |
| Cash value | None | Yes, tax-deferred |
| Often used for | The mortgage and income years at the lowest cost | A lifelong need, education or retirement goals, business planning |
Many homeowners start with term coverage with living benefits sized to the mortgage, and add permanent coverage later when there is a lifelong need and steady cash flow to fund it.
How a planning conversation with Jasmine works
- A conversation first. Your goals, budget, mortgage and who depends on you. Jasmine does not quote prices online, because the right policy depends on details a form cannot capture.
- A needs review. Coverage sized to the loan balance, the income years and goals such as education or retirement, with an honest answer on term, permanent or a mix of both.
- Carrier comparison. Options from several carriers, including how each defines and pays living benefits, walked through line by line in English, Mandarin or Cantonese.
- The application, together. Usually completed on a call. The carrier then underwrites, which can include health questions and sometimes a paramedical exam.
- Delivery and yearly reviews. The policy is reviewed at delivery and checked over time, so coverage and funding keep up with your mortgage, income and goals.

This page is general information, not tax, legal or investment advice. Rider definitions, benefit amounts, costs and policy values vary by carrier, policy and state, and illustrations are not guarantees. Honest framing
Permanent coverage is not right for everyone.
If your priority is the most coverage per dollar for a fixed twenty or thirty years, term life with living benefits is usually the better and cheaper answer, and I will say so. Permanent coverage becomes worth discussing when you have a lifelong need, or want cash value for education or retirement goals, and can fund it consistently for many years.
Guarantees depend on the claims-paying ability of the issuing insurer. Life insurance is not a bank deposit, is not FDIC insured and is not a direct investment in the stock market.
Living benefits and life insurance questions, answered
Living benefits are accelerated benefit riders that let you receive part of your death benefit while you are alive, after a qualifying terminal, chronic or critical illness. The money can be used for treatment, the mortgage, lost income or anything else. Whatever is paid early reduces the death benefit, and what qualifies varies by carrier and policy.
Many term policies do, either built in or as an optional rider, though not every term policy includes all three types. That is why Jasmine compares how several carriers define terminal, chronic and critical illness before you choose, rather than looking at price alone.
It depends on the policy. Terminal illness usually means a physician-certified life expectancy of 12 to 24 months. Chronic illness usually means being unable to perform 2 of 6 activities of daily living, such as bathing or dressing, or a severe cognitive impairment. Critical illness covers listed diagnoses such as a heart attack, stroke, invasive cancer or kidney failure.
Sometimes. Some policies include living benefits riders with no added premium and apply a charge or discount only if you use them; others charge for the rider. Ask a tax professional about how any accelerated benefit would be taxed in your situation.
For covering a mortgage and the working years at the lowest cost, term life with living benefits is usually the better fit. Permanent coverage is worth discussing when you also want lifelong coverage and tax-deferred cash value for goals such as education or retirement. Some homeowners use both. See term vs permanent life insurance.
Cash value in a permanent policy builds over time and can later be withdrawn or borrowed for any purpose, including tuition. It is not a 529 plan: it is insurance first, loans and withdrawals reduce the cash value and death benefit, and it works best when started years ahead. Jasmine shows how it fits alongside other savings.
Jasmine helps clients add tax-deferred growth and lifetime income options to their retirement plan with annuities and permanent life insurance, alongside a 401(k) or IRA. Annuities can have surrender charges on early withdrawals, and guarantees depend on the issuing insurer.
Yes. Jasmine helps self-employed people and small business owners look at tax-advantaged protection and retirement plans built with life insurance and annuities, and coordinates with their CPA. Tax results depend on the plan and the business, so final decisions are made with your tax professional.
It depends on age, health, the amount of coverage and the type of policy, so there is no honest one-size price. Jasmine does not quote online; she starts with a conversation, then compares several carriers so you see the costs before you apply.
