Private School Guide for Central New Jersey Home Buyers

Your child may attend a private school, but the public district behind your address still shapes resale value, property taxes, and who provides school transportation. This guide compares Niche ratings for four Central Jersey districts and shows you how to verify a home's school boundary before you sign.

Why the public school district still matters if you choose private school

Resale

You may not use the district, but your future buyer may. District reputation is part of how comparable homes are priced when you sell.

Transportation

In New Jersey, your resident public district handles eligible private school busing, or pays aid in lieu of transportation.

Taxes

School taxes are part of every property tax bill, whether or not your child attends the public schools.

Plan B

Tuition, admissions and your needs can change. A strong public option can serve as a backup plan.

How to verify school boundaries: a checklist for home buyers

Listing details, map apps, and ZIP codes are a starting point, not proof. Use these steps for any home where the school district matters to you.

1

Confirm the municipality, not the mailing address

New Jersey public school eligibility depends on where the student is domiciled, which means the town where the home is legally located. Postal town names and ZIP codes follow mail routes, not school boundaries, so a "Princeton" or "Metuchen" mailing address does not by itself tell you which township or district the home is in.Check the property's block, lot, and municipality on its tax record. Your title search should also confirm them before closing.

2

Ask the district which school serves the exact address

Get the answer from the district itself before you rely on it. Use the contact or tool listed below.

Edison

Call the district at (732) 452-4900, or use the Enrollment Resources page. Confirm both the elementary school and whether the address feeds Edison High School or J.P. Stevens High School.

South Brunswick

New students register at the school they will attend, and proof of residency is required at the registration appointment (Student Registration Information). District office: (732) 297-7800.

West Windsor-Plainsboro

Use "What School?" and the Residency Hotline in the district's Registration section. Confirm whether the address feeds High School North or High School South.

Metuchen

For 2026–27, Metuchen organizes schools by grade level: Moss serves PreK–2, Campbell serves 3–5, Edgar serves 6–8, and Metuchen High School serves 9–12 (New Student Registration).

3

Get it in writing, with a date

Save the email or written reply from the district. Boundaries and grade configurations can change; Metuchen's 2026–27 realignment is one example. During attorney review, ask your attorney whether the answer should be documented in the file.

4

Know what residency proof you will need

New Jersey districts verify residency at registration under state rules (N.J.A.C. 6A:22). Expect to provide documents such as a deed or lease, and plan your closing or lease start date around the school calendar. The NJ Department of Education publishes residency guidance and sample forms.

5

Choosing private school? Check transportation eligibility

For eligible students, the resident public district provides transportation to a nonpublic school, or pays aid in lieu of transportation. Students qualify as "remote" when they live beyond 2 miles (grades K–8) or 2½ miles (grades 9–12) from the school. Additional rules apply beyond 20 miles. Aid in lieu is $1,177 for 2026–27, according to the NJ Department of Education.

Measure the drive from the house to the private school, and ask the district's transportation office about routes and application deadlines before you commit.

6

Treat listing and app data as a starting point

School fields on listings and third-party maps can be outdated or wrong. If a specific school assignment affects your decision, rely on the district's written confirmation.
