A Closer Look at Each District

South Brunswick — Highest Countywide Ranking

South Brunswick ranks #1 among Middlesex County school districts, with an A+ overall Niche grade. The district is mid-sized (12 schools), and its community has grown increasingly familiar to Chinese-American families over the past several years. If overall district ranking is your top priority, South Brunswick has the strongest numbers of the five.

Metuchen — Small and Close-Knit

Metuchen is the smallest of the five districts, with just 4 schools, yet it still ranks in the top 25 statewide (#23). Many alumni reviews mention a strong sense of community and dedicated teachers. If you’re drawn to a “small-town” feel and want your child to grow up in a tighter community, Metuchen is worth a close look.

Edison (incl. North Edison) — Largest District, Most Options

Edison has the highest enrollment of the five districts (over 17,000 students) and is the area I know best after years of working here. While its statewide ranking (#45) isn’t as flashy as South Brunswick’s or Metuchen’s, it makes up for it in program variety — its 19 schools include Edison Magnet School, known for math and science, as well as the well-established J.P. Stevens High School. A larger district generally means more resources, which suits families who value having options.

East Brunswick — Strong Extracurriculars

Reviews of East Brunswick consistently highlight its music programs and extracurricular activities, along with strong marks for student inclusivity and engagement. If your child is drawn to music or the arts, this district deserves serious consideration.

Piscataway — Fastest-Rising, Strong Diversity

Piscataway has made the biggest jump of the five over the past two years — its 2026 Niche ranking climbed from #69 to #59 statewide, and from #7 to #6 within the county. It earned A+ grades in both College Prep and Diversity, making it a district that Chinese-American families have increasingly started to watch as an up-and-coming option.

How to Choose: A Few Practical Tips

  • Prioritizing overall ranking? Consider South Brunswick or Metuchen first
  • Want variety and magnet school options? Edison offers the most resources
  • Child interested in music or the arts? East Brunswick stands out for extracurriculars
  • Limited budget but want upside potential? Piscataway has improved quickly and may offer better value relative to the other districts

Of course, district ranking is just one factor in choosing where to live — commute time, home budget, neighborhood character, and your child’s specific interests should all factor into the decision.

Let a Local Agent Who Knows These Districts Help You Decide

District rankings shift slightly every year, but what really determines whether a district is right for your family often comes down to details you won’t find in any ranking list — which specific street, which school zone, which elementary feeder pattern.

As a real estate agent who has long served Edison, Metuchen, East Brunswick, South Brunswick, and Piscataway, I can combine the latest district data, current listings, and your family’s specific needs — commute, budget, kids’ ages — to help you find the community that truly fits.
